Stentor coeruleus
These big blue ciliates are among the largest of the aquatic protozoans measuring up to 2 millimetres when fully extended.
They are trumpet shaped with cilia around the rim of the trumpet and on the body.
Stentor feed on bacteria and/or other protozoans and some of the smallest multicellular organisms, such as rotifers.
They are found in dimly lit water and will swim away from bright light showing negative photo taxis.
